Number of Extreme Precipitation Days

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2023
This indicator shows the number of extreme precipitation days per year.

Extreme precipitation days are a model-based estimate and defined by those days in which the daily maximum precipitation exceeded the 90th percentile threshold.

Why is this important?

The International Panel on Climate Change reports an increase in annual precipitation throughout the U.S. and believes this increase will lead to more severe weather events such as storms and floods. These weather events can impact health directly through injuries, drowning, hypothermia, infectious diseases and effects on mental health. These events can also leave an economic impact on infrastructure, economic vulnerability, water resource concerns and harvest losses.
